The tale of the tape. MJ > Kobe

Even with my newfound respect for Kobe Bryant  (yikes) I can’t believe I’m posting a graph comparing these two players.  I found this on theHoopDoctors.com

There is no comparison.  This new generation of NBA lovers wants to pretend there is a comparison but they didn’t grow up with Jordan flying above their heads like we did.  The graph below only tells half the story.  I’ve also posted an amazing response to that graph on Hoop Doctors by “RTG”.  Whoever that is, he is more obsessive than me.  Take a look for yourself.   Jordan is the Greatest of All Time - the GOAT.

Greatest of All Time

Posted Response on HoopDoctors by “RTG” - well done my friend.

Scoring titles
Michael Jordan: 10

Of course Jordan has the most scoring titles in NBA history. He also led the league in total points his rookie season, but was third in scoring average. He is the only player besides Wilt Chamberlain to score 3,000 points in a season.

Jordan was the first player in NBA history to lead the league in both scoring and steals. He achieved this feat three times. The only other player to do it is Allen Iverson.

Jordan is the fourth player in NBA history to win a scoring title and an NBA championship in the same season, which he did all six times.

In 1996, Jordan became the second player in NBA history to sweep the MVP awards (regular season, NBA Finals, All-Star Game) after Willis Reed. He would sweep them again in 1998, making him the only player to do it multiple times.

Kobe has been out performed by teammates in 5 out of his 7 NBA Finals appearances, Michael Jordan was never out performed by a teammate. Michael Jordan never had a teammate average over 20.0ppg in any NBA Finals who shot a higher percentage than him, Kobe’s had a teammate do this 4 times (Gasol doesn’t get enough shot attempts or it would be 7 times).

Michael Jordan consistently raised his team’s level of play, while Kobe Bryant hinders his team’s level of play by consistently missing so many shots. Michael Jordan carried his team consistently, and on the flip side Kobe Bryant’s team carries him consistently.

Record as team leader
Michael Air Jordan: 640-290 (.688)
Kobe Bean Bryant: 300-224 (.573)

Michael Air Jordan: Missed postseason 0 times in 13 seasons
Kobe Bryant: Missed postseason 1 time in 6 seasons

NBA Finals Most Valuable Player awards
Michael Jordan: 6 in 6 tries
Kobe Bryant: 2 in 7 tries

As you can see, it would take Kobe 3 full careers to truly eclipse Michael Jordan. He’s so far off he has absolutely no chance to pass Michael Air Jordan whatsoever…

The King turns into The Villian. (we still love you…kind of)

The NBA free agent media frenzy is over but the fallout has just begun for the hit on Lebron’s image around the sports world.  I mean, lets face it, there are FAR more important things going on in the world than where a basketball player decides to play. However you wouldn’t have known it during the last few weeks.  Lebron was the center of attention.  And rightfully so.   Wait, what?

Yes I said it -  rightfully so.  We live in a media snippet - twitter obsessed society in America now and this whole bizarre situation reflects us perfectly.  We deserved this fiasco.  Everyone has a reality TV show.  Everyone is self obsessed and self important.  What Lebron did by taking out an hour of live TV on ESPN last night was absolute genius…….at least it was in his self centered mind.  Its all about me.  I’m a rockstar. Look at me.  This is the world we live in now.

That is why next year I’m secretly rooting for Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook to come out of the West and give this Miami superteam a run for its money in the finals next year.  Durant quietly signed a 5 year - $85 million dollar contract extension with the small market Thunder with barely any media coverage at all.  I like his style.

Going to the Miami Heat was very strange to a Lebron fan indeed. But it is starting to make sense all this strangeness.   Lebron is not Jordan.  He is not Russell, Magic, Bird, or Kobe.  He is scared.  Scared he’ll go down as a Barkley or a Malone -   a great player without a ring.  Going to Miami assures his best chance at a ring.  But this move is usually something players do at age 35, not 25.  I don’t care that he left Cleveland, I care that he did it on national TV.  That was cold.

But I do wished he had forged his own path.  Chicago would have been the best choice to win AND still be the man.  Derrick Rose would have been his “Pippen”.   Now he’s the no.2 option to shoot it at the end of the game behind Wade (in my opinion).  And maybe that’s how he’s always wanted it.  Maybe he really is more Magic than Michael.

Lebron, Just do me one favor when you are down there in South Beach. Grow up.  No more Jesus- chalk throws before the game, no more photo-posing with teammates, and no more dancing.   That was for Cleveland.  Just get out there, average a triple double, and win your title as the humble man you claim to be now.   Your fans are still with you even if Cleveland is not.  But we are holding on for dear life.

Le Decision is making me Le Sick

Lebron.  You haven’t won a title yet.  You are not that important to get your own ESPN show announcing your decision.  This hype is ridiculous even for us Lebron superfans……Quite honestly its mostly the media’s fault, but it still is insane.  If you diss the Cavs on National TV and go to the Knicks you will taint your already fading image among the purists.  (However, if you go to the Knicks I’ll be able to see you play on TV everyday) :)

Don’t all the Kobe fans think this whole thing is BS?  I mean, Kobe has 5 rings now.  But the news only cares about youth and the future.  If Lebron doesn’t win a title in the next two years, they’ll turn on him.  Just watch.

Go Los Suns - (Politics, Blood, and Basketball)

I know I must have pissed off the Basketball Gods this year because right now its looking like a terrible finals - the Lakers vs. the Celtics.  I know that it would be great for the NBA to have the two classic Titan teams face off again (on paper anyway).  But if you are true lover of the game you’ll be rooting for Los Suns, and here’s why:

1. Steve Nash is the F@#king man.

Besides listening to Radiohead and making awesomely weird youtube videos, Steve Nash is just simply the craziest mofo on the court.   Derek Fisher just broke Nash’s nose in game 3 and Nash pulled it back into place himself and kept playing.  Hell yeah.  What more do you want out of your basketball heros?

2. Celtic fans don’t watch the same game you do.

I’m all for being a fanatic and going crazy for your team.  But have you watched the Celtics in the playoffs this year?  I guess I’ve never noticed it before but the C’s fans are bat shit crazy.   Every single play they are screaming at the refs.  Every single play. And when Paul Pierce flops (which he does every other possession) the crowd wants to storm the court and fight the opposing defender with bats, knives, and other various forms of slow death medieval weaponry….  Seriously, they want to KILL the opposing team.  They want to KILL them.  I’ve never seen such unjustifiable biased passion out- side of politics.

Nothing would please me more than to see Steve Nash take a charge from Big Baby, and with blood gushing from somewhere on his face, and the Celtic crowd freaking out about how Nash was somehow to blame for that very blood, Nash gets back up, sinks a couple of game tying free throws and flips off the crowd with a toothless, hockey smile.

And the whole “Lebron New York Knicks” chant was just plain cruel.  I kind of respect how mean that was…… It was classic, but cruel as hell.  You are crazy people.

3.  Grant Hill is the f@#$ing man.

Grant Hill was on his way to a Hall of Fame career (still might get in) and then had a million ankle surgeries (and a staph infection that almost killed him) and could never get back on the court full time - until now.  He’s 37 and has played two full seasons in a row with the Suns and is a big reason why they are still in the playoffs.   I know he made insane money while sitting with injuries in his career but you can’t blame him for that.  He would have played if he could have.

4.  Lakers vs. Celtics = Flop City

Between Fisher and Pierce alone we might see 29 flops per game.  The refs will no doubt play a huge part of the series and that sucks for fans.  And no one works the refs like Kobe and KG.   I know my boy Lebron and every smart player looks for a bailout call at times……but this series will be shameless - guaranteed.   Forget your popcorn,  get out your wheelchair for Paul Pierce and your earplugs for Kobe’s screams of “Heeeeeey” every drive.  Woohoo.

5.  The Phoenix Suns owner, coach, and players took a stand against their own state law.    The Phoenix Suns took a big risk wearing the “Los Suns” jerseys.

The “Los” Suns winning it all would be a slap in the face to Sarah Palin and all her idiot Arizona friends who think local cops should have the right to stop any non-white people they want for no reason.  The new culture of Arizona Immigration Laws are so racist, they are starting to target  English teachers with accents.   God forbid anyone with an accent.  Aren’t we all speaking English with an accent….(oh wait thats the British).  Don’t teachers and immigrants go through enough shit?  This ridiculous law is not the way to protect our borders or treat the people that cook your food, mow your lawns, do your laundry, teach your students, and watch your children. Not everyone is born white and privileged.  And besides, they aren’t taking YOUR jobs. Those are in India now.   Sorry for the politics but seriously,   F@#k you redneck racist idiots.

Go LOS Suns.

THE BASKETBALL WORLD IS ON ITS HEAD

I told you Mike Brown  (not that you listen to anyone or anything, including common sense.)   Hmmm lets see, you had a 25 game winning streak during the year without Shaq or Ilgaskaus but with JJ Hickson starting -  a young, active, leaping power forward that dunked on people’s heads and actually developed a decent jump shot.    Yes he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed from a Bball IQ standpoint but he would have battled harder that any of your old big men inside.  (I predicted it, see previous post)

Consider yourself fired.   What Lebron needs is a Phil Jackson-esque coach to reign in his skills and adopt him into a system.   Mike Brown is a good coach and a good basketball mind, but I don’t think he has the experience or the balls to stand up to his superstar.  And thats what Bron needs. (besides a midrange game and another player)     I know Jamison and Mo Williams played like shit but whatever, but you and the Cavs front office thought Shaq was your ticket.  Nope, you are gone.  And probably Lebron is gone too.   And now the BASKETBALL WORLD IS ON ITS HEAD.

So where is LBJ going next year?  Well all my NY friends think the Knicks.  I don’t think so…….  I have them 4th on my list.  Which goes like this:

1. Chicago

2. Cleveland

3. Dallas

4. New York Knicks

5.  Miami

6.  Nets - would’ve been #3  because they didn’t get #1 or #2 in the 2010 draft (John Wall and Evan Turner respectively)

7. Clippers

I’ll spare you all details of each possibility….you already know them. There are only 50,000 articles written everyday on the subject of Lebron.   To be honest, I’m a little sickened by it all.  I mean…the playoffs are on and great players are still in there competing.   I actually can’t wait to see Kobe guarding Rondo in the Finals starting in game 2….after the Celtics snag game 1 from the Lakers due to an all out Rondo assault on Fisher with a quadruple double. (22 point, 17 assists, 10 rebs, 10 steals)

( I’m actually rooting for Steve Nash and the Suns but we all know its going Lakers/Celtics finals again )

So much of the next 5-10 years in the NBA depends upon this season’s free agency and draft.  Its not just Lebron either.  You know the Free agents but I’ll name a few others (Wade, Bosh, Amare, Joe Johnson, Dirk, Paul Pierce, Ginobli, Boozer, Yao). Maybe you’ve heard of these guys.   This summer will shape the future of the league.

And I’m not convinced yet that John Wall can single handedly turn around a franchise.  I mean I know he’s lightning quick, but we’ll see.  I’d take Evan Turner but I’m old school and I could be wrong about Wall.

Yes its no surprise I was a Cavs fan or rather a “Lebron” fan.   And I may have to become a Bulls fan again like in my childhood or god forbid a Knicks fan if he comes to NYC.   But more importantly I’m a fan of good basketball.   If Lebron ends up with another team with bad playoff chemistry and a coach that strokes him no matter what, I may end up being a Thunder fan in the coming years ( and watch Westbrook and Durant demolish the aging Western Conference).

There I”m done with Lebron - for now.  Call me a bandwagon jumper if you want, but I’ve sat through 5 freaking years of Cavs heartache just to watch my favorite player come up short.   If I really was jumping on bandwagons, I’d have on my Yankee hat while watching the final season of Lost all while talking about how great Kobe Bryant is.  ( I’m not saying he’s not, but take away Gasol on the Lakers and see what happens then) .  I’m off to watch the Mets now.  (No offense Lost fans……but you eat it Yankee fans)   Peace.

The next wave. The Insomniac’s Top 10 “young” NBA Players.

The NBA has a bright future.  And here are 10 reasons why:

10. Brandon Jennings - his 80’s haircuts alone get him into the top 10.

9.  Blake Griffin - I guarantee next year he will be a monster. And this is why:

8.  DeJuan Blair - no ACL’s in either knee, no problem.  Steal of the draft at #37.

7. Darren Collison - filling in nicely for Chris Paul…..was averaging 20 and 10 for a good stretch.

6. Eric Gordon - dude is smooth as hell.

5. Russel Westbrook - if he stays with Durant, then we may have the new Western Conference power.

4.  Stephen Curry -  the manchild.  This guy is my favorite rook.

3. Derrick Rose - Dude is sick. One of the best dunkers in the league. .

2.Tyreke Evans - mini Lebron.

1. Kevin Durant - the only real threat to the king’s throne.  Best pure scorer in the league NOW.

Take into account the Draft Class of 2010 - John Wall/Evan Turner/Wesley Johnson/Demarcus Cousins and its a good time to be a fan.

Kobe’s Back. I predict a Laker Championship.

He’s Baaaaack.  Kobe Bryant came back tonight after missing 5 games from an ankle injury to once again hit a game winning shot.  Not too mention he had a ridiculous stat line for coming back from an injury ( 32 pts on 13/19 FG, 7rebs, 6 assists, 3 steals, 2 blks)  The man is absolutely clutch.  What can I say?  He in not MJ, he is not Lebron, he is his own player - Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers were doing just fine without him but now with him back they have the best clutch player in the game right now. And with the Cavs recent 3 game skid the Lakers have got to be favorite for the title come this spring.

If you read my blog, you know I’m a Lebron freak….and he’s having a monstrous MVP year………..but I’ve been let down too many times by Mike Brown’s lack of quality playoff coaching and the Cavs knack for standing around watching Lebron struggle to take on entire teams in the playoffs.  Even with Shaq and Jamison the Cavs still have to prove they can win in the playoffs. Kobe has proven it time and time again. Damn.

Kobe has got nothing on his mind but his legacy and winning more championships,  and as much as it hurts to say it…..If I was a betting man, I bet on Kobe.

Jamison to the Cavs is better than Amare to Cavs. Did Lebron get his Pippen?

I think this is a better scenario for the Cavs than if Amare Stoudemire came to Cleveland for 4 reasons:

1.) The Cavs get to keep J.J. Hickson, who would have left in the Phoenix trade.  J.J.Hickson has been a perfect uptempo role player all season.  He brings great energy off of the bench, but can actually score as opposed to Varejao’s mainly defensive presence.

Hickson does things like this all the time.

2.)  Jamison can create his own shot.  Maybe the first legit #2 scorer Lebron has ever played with.  Will be huge in the playoffs when the Cavs face good defensive teams such as the Celtics and Magic.  He has a career 19.9 PPG.

3.)  Jamison is a class act.  Word around the league is that Jamison is a consumate professional on and off the court.  He brings more Veteran leadership to the Cavs locker room and will be a perfect fit into the culture of basketball that centers around Lebron.

4.) Amare and Shaq didn’t play so well together in 2008-2009.  They say Amare doesn’t play D, but I don’t think that would have been a problem.  I just think Jamison fits better as a player/personality.

PUT THE SOUL BACK IN THE LEAGUE - The NBA wonders why it is losing $400 million per year - PART 2

Its very fitting that the 2010 NBA All Star was played in Dallas at Cowboys Stadium to the largest crowd ever to see a basketball game. The 100,000+ people in attendance were treated to performances by Usher, Shakira, Alicia Keys…..and oh yeah…an All Star Game. But David Stern -  bigger doesn’t mean better.  Yes the athletes were fantastic, yes the basketball game was good, yes D-wade and Lebron kicked ass as usual.  But you know what was missing in my humble insomniac opinion - SOUL.

The NBA I grew up with and fell in love with was the NBA that featured their stars in the Slam Dunk Competion.  Lets not front about what we love most about Basketball - CREATIVITY.  And having your stars flying through the air gets kids to buy the posters, buy the shoes, and watch the games on TV.  This year the NBA dropped the ball.  ( I know I know, thats awful ) But really, the Slam Dunk Competition is official dead once again.

Now imagine the NBA choosing a different path here.  Instead of paying Usher, Shakira, and Alicia Keys to turn the All Star weekend into an MTV Music Award fiasco…….pay Lebron, Dwight Howard, Nate Robinson, D. Wade,  D. Rose, and other top NBA Stars to actually COMPETE for something.   THE NBA SHOULD HAVE MADE A $20 MILLION DOLLAR DONATION TO HAITI during the dunk competion in the winners name.  ( Sir Charles came up with this idea a month ago ) Not only are you marketing your biggest stars on the biggest possible stage but you are connecting your sport to actual human beings and actual causes.  Put the SOUL back in the league.

Enough with this giant stadium show hype.  I want to see Lebron dunking from the freethrow line.  I want to see something real and something special.  You want to connect with fans again?  You want those baseball, Nascar, and football fans to watch your sport?  Take a lead from the 80’s All Star Weekends - ala Jordan vs. Dominique

Like Charles Barkley said the other night on TNT - it would be a shame if there was a strike next year.  This league and its players are literally Billionaires and Millionaires and are fighting over ridiculous money.  The rest of the country is facing a real recession and real money problems.

So stop with the MTV halftime shows and get old school again.  Put Lebron vs Wade in the dunk competion and donate that $$$ to Haiti.  Im done.

The NBA wonders why it is losing $400 million per year.

I guarantee that after the 20 minute All Star Player introduction that Mom and Dad turned this shit off to watch something else.  For some reason, Usher sweating, gyrating,  and lip-synching doesn’t really get the average sports fan excited to see a basketball game.  Well done David Stern.

And don’t get me started on the the Slam Dunk Competition.  That was sad.   I don’t even want to talk about it other than saying that whoever stared that website to get Shannon Brown into the dunk contest must be feeling like an idiot today.
